Historical Irony

[I've been sitting on this one for several days, because I really had wished I could stay away from politics, and I do plan to post about other stuff shortly. In any event, this (but for the footnote) was composed last week, after the CBS report in question aired.]

93, all!

During the 1988 presidential campaign, one lingering issue which threatened the prospects of candidate George H.W. Bush was his alleged role in the Iran/contra "scandal." Interestingly enough, just when incriminating evidence was beginning to crystallize, Texan Dan Rather -- inadvertently, one assumes -- managed singlehandedly to get Bush out of this mess, conducting a "botched" CBS interview which ended up building sympathy for Bush and forcing everybody else in the media to drop the subject.

During the 2004 presidential campaign, one lingering issue which threatened the prospects of incumbent George W. Bush was his alleged shirking of his military duties. Interestingly enough, just when incriminating evidence was beginning to crystallize, Texan Dan Rather -- inadvertently, one assumes -- may have managed singlehandedly to get Bush out of this mess, conducting a "botched" CBS expose which could end up building sympathy for Bush and forcing everybody else in the media to drop the subject.

Anyone ready to roll his eyes and mutter "conspiracy theory"* might want to reread the last two paragraphs, noting that they consist solely of simple statements of obvious fact.

93 93/93 -- AJ

* Many Americans have a religious commitment to what I call the "Coincidence Theory of History," which goes something like: "Powerful people in this country never do anything to defend, or expand, their power. In America, unlike everywhere else in all of recorded history, everything happens by sheer accident, and anything which looks like a concerted effort is merely coincidental." Easy way (therefore) to win a drink from my fellow Americans: bet 'em that you can prove to their complete satisfaction that the 9/11 attacks were the result of a conspiracy. You would be astonished how many dodoes will take your bet...only to sputter when you point out that any time upwards of nineteen people covertly arrange a simultaneous action, a "conspiracy" has by definition taken place. Years of conditioning to disbelieve what they're taught to call "conspiracy theories" has made many of them incapable of processing even the obvious facts they do know.
