Five years on

Warning: this post is intended to counteract the constant drumbeat that "9/11 changed the world forever," insofar as it's meant to mean, "9/11 closed the book on all that silly 'land of the free, home of the brave' stuff. Hide under the bed and shut up, now, there's a good little slave." That said, it's not a "partisan" post, given that I feel much the same horror towards the Democrats' response to 9/11, as I do the GOP's. Then too, for those whose reading skills aren't too good, I called for war against al Qaeda years before 9/11; I called for toppling the Taliban in Afghanistan months before 9/11; I supported, and support now, the war against armed religious fanaticism wholeheartedly; and I am as horrified as the reddest of red-staters by the rise of an unthinking "anti-war" movement in the middle of an existential war for civilization itself.

Got it? Got it!

Look, life is and always has been a rough and tumble business. The answer to "Can't we all just get along?" is in some instances a resounding "No," and much as we might wish it peace is NOT always "the answer." But given the need for war, could we please have our wars run by people who (a) aren't crooks, (b) aren't insane, and (c) know what they're doing?

Beyond that, some of us already cared about the flag on 9/10/01 -- and for "the republic, for which it stands," including its Constitution, and most especially its Bill of Rights. For folks like us, this pretty much says it all:

"[I]f sowing terror is their goal, this administration has made the terrorists' strategy a resounding success. We, as a nation, have evolved from Patrick Henry's inspirational, "Give me liberty or give me death!", to Bush's "Give me your liberties or you'll die." -- Markos Moulitsas Zuniga.*

'Nuff said.

God bless these United States...and guide the hand of those whose who have sworn to defend, and do daily defend, its Constitution with their lives.

P.S. If you think this was harsh, check out Eric Alterman's piece on msnbc.com. They just fired him. Small wonder:
