...why I have not done my several-times-yearly tribute to American men and women under arms, which usually shows up like clockwork on Veteran's Day, Memorial Day, and the Fourth of July (at least). Simple: not only have I said it all before, but current circumstances make it more difficult than ever to know what to say...and to keep it from just being easy words.
Those serving today, more than at any time since the Vietnam War ended thirty years ago, are in three basic camps: those who believe passionately in their current mission, those who feel betrayed by it, and those just getting through as best they can. I suspect all three can agree on at least one thing: some old stateside fuck yammering at them isn't much use, beyond a "Thank you, your service humbles me, and I am grateful for it beyond words." The least this old stateside fuck can do is keep it at that.
I pray for your safe and swift return. Amen.
